Grinders
Grinders are synthesizable items required in the process of Weapon Grinding, that allow the player to increase the ATP or TP, and in most cases the PP of a weapon.
Obtaining Grinders
Grinders may be obtained via Item Synthesis, by purchasing grinder boards from MA-GRMS: Clyez and using Grinder Base materials from the same store, or found in missions. When a Grinder is synthesized, it will receive a randomly determined success rate enhancement of between +1 and +10. A higher success rate indicates a greater chance of the grinder being successful. Grinders may also be synthesized in quantities of up to five at a time, and when synthesized in this way, the entire batch will share the same Success Rate bonus.
There are four 'ranks' of grinders, corresponding to the four ranks of weapons. Grinder C's may only be used on C rank weapons. Grinder B's may be used on both B rank weapons and C rank weapons. Grinder A's may be used on weapons that are either A, B or C rank. A Grinder S may be used on weapons of any rank.
Determining if a Weapon may be Upgraded
In the upper right corner of each weapon's main information box, two numbers are displayed which indicate the present grind status of the weapon. The format used to display a weapon's grind status is: [Current grinds]/[Maximum possible grinds]. When a weapon is successfully upgraded to its maximum possible number of grinds, it may not be upgraded any further.
Example: A weapon with 7/9 grinds has been successfully upgraded 7 times, and it may be upgraded a total of 9 times. If the following two attempts to grind the weapon are successful, it will then have 9/9 grinds and may not be upgraded further.
Failing a Grind
Weapons bought from NPC shops, newly synthesized weapons, and weapons dropped by enemies may have up to a maximum of 10 grinds applied to them. However, if an attempt to grind the weapon fails, the weapon's [Current grind] will be reset to 0, and the weapon's [Maximum possible grind] will be reduced by 1.
Example: If the player attempts to upgrade the above 7/9 weapon and the following grind fails, the weapon will then have 0/8 grinds.
If a weapon's maximum possible grinds falls to 0, it will no longer be grindable, and thus may not be upgraded with grinders.
About Grinding Odds
The chance of a weapon being successfully upgraded decreases as its number of current grinds increases. This chance of success is also slightly lower for weapons of higher ranks. For more detailed information on Grinding Success Odds, please visit the article on Weapon Grinding.
